Winchester Cyclists are Streets Ahead

Cycling is the fastest way to get around Winchester. And obviously it's far cheaper than driving a car, and better for everyone's health. So it's no surprise that more and more people are cycling in Winchester - about ten percent more each year. "That's something to celebrate, and every year we do celebrate it - in Bike Week!" said local cyclist John Edwards who's been involved for several years.

Bike Week this year, in Winchester and nationally, will run from Saturday 14 June to Sunday 22 June.

Winchester cyclists, cycling instructors and Friends of the Earth have organised a full programme of rides and training sessions for all ages and abilities. Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Council are supporting the programme. Posters and leaflets giving details of all the events will be at bike shops, information centres, libraries and many other locations.

Once again the opening event in Winchester will be the popular "Cavalcade" ride around the city centre, starting at The Broadway on Saturday 14 June at 11 am. Anyone riding a roadworthy bike can take part - just turn up on the day. Eye-catching costumes are especially welcome!

Notes to Editors:

1. "Cycling is the fastest way to get around Winchester": this was proven in the "Commuter Challenge" in 2007. From Badger Farm, St Cross, Harestock and Highcliffe a walker, a cyclist and a motorist set off at the same time as a bus. In each case the cyclist was the first to reach the Guildhall.

2. We'll issue further media releases for particular Winchester events in this year's programme.

3. We can provide the full Winchester programme in hardcopy or as a .pdf file sent by e-mail.
