The Battle of Cheriton

The Battle of Cheriton took place to the east of Winchester on 29th March 1644, at the height of the Civil War. Here, in a day-long encounter, Royalists fought Parliamentarians for effective control of central southern England. At the end of the battle, Cromwell's forces were victorious and forced the King's supporters to retreat northwards.

In 2005, a walking trail around the battlefield was established, highlighting the important strategic locations of the encounter. The full walk is 8 ¾ km long, taking three to three and a half hours, but shorter circular routes can also be created.

The Cheriton Battlefield Walk leaflet maps out the walking route, which begins at the Hinton Arms pub, providing commentary on the route and an insight into the events that may have taken places on the day of the battle.

History buffs may want to combine the Cheriton Battlefield Walk with an overnight stay at Old Kennetts Cottage bed and breakfast. The fourteenth century thatched cottage was used as a hospital following the battle.

The walking trail leaflet and details of Old Kennetts Cottage are both available through the tourist information centre on 01962 840 500 or at tourism@winchester.gov.uk
