8 Bank House
Gunner’s Bank was the last privately owned family bank in England and was the last to print its own bank notes (some of which may be seen in the Museum). The Bank was started by William Gunner, a solicitor in the town in 1809. He founded the bank in 1820 to help local farmers and business people from surrounding areas who attended the weekly market in the town. The bank was administrated by successive members of the family and for several years was run by Caroline Gunner, the widow of one of William’s sons. It was finally taken over by Barclays in 1953.
