What is Hampshire Open Studios?
Hampshire Open Studios is a county-wide event showcasing the diverse talents of Hampshire’s artists. This year, over 300 artists and makers across Hampshire are again opening their homes, studios, and creative spaces to visitors to provide a rare opportunity to see the creative process in action. From painting and sculpture to textiles and photography, there’s something to inspire everyone.
Why visit?
Meet the artists: Discover the stories behind artists’ work, learn about their creative processes, and even watch them in action. The Colour Factory, one of our ‘Made in Winchester’ partners, is ten minutes from Winchester High Street and the railway station. It is opening its doors so visitors can see original work, including paintings, jewellery, ceramics, metalwork, prints, greeting cards, and gifts.
Discover hidden gems: With studios scattered across Winchester and further afield, the event offers a beautiful opportunity to explore the district, where you’ll find art in unexpected places.
Support local art: By visiting and purchasing directly from the artists, you support the local creative community. Your contribution helps sustain their practice and keeps the cultural fabric of Hampshire vibrant and alive.
Free and accessible: Most studios offer free entry, making art accessible to everyone. Families, art enthusiasts, and those simply curious will find a welcoming atmosphere where they can explore at their own pace.
Highlights to look forward to
Interactive workshops: Many artists offer workshops and demonstrations, providing a hands-on experience for visitors. Whether you want to try your hand at pottery, learn new painting techniques, or delve into printmaking, there are plenty of opportunities to unleash your creativity.
Group exhibitions: Some venues host group exhibitions, where you can see the works of several artists in one location. These exhibitions are a great way to compare different styles and mediums and find a new favourite artist.
Family-friendly activities: Many studios offer activities that engage children and inspire young minds. It’s a fantastic way to introduce children to art and creativity.
Plan your visit
Explore the Hampshire Open Studios website to make the most of your experience. Here, you’ll find a comprehensive guide to participating artists, studio locations, and opening times. The site also features an interactive map, helping you plan a route that takes in as many studios as possible. Be sure to:
Check opening times: While many studios are open daily, some have specific visiting hours. It’s a good idea to double-check before setting out.
Wear comfortable shoes: You might walk more than expected as you explore different studios and the surrounding areas.
Bring cash/card: While many artists accept card payments, having some cash on hand is always handy, especially for smaller purchases.
