About City Walk

Follow in King Alfred’s footsteps on this tour of Winchester’s historic landmarks. Trace the footsteps of King Alfred from his statue in the Broadway to his last known resting place beneath Hyde Abbey Garden.

This self-guided tour is divided into three loops so you can choose how much to do.

The Heart of the Ancient Capital
(Approximately 1 mile of level walking, generally suitable for wheelchairs, allow about 1 hour)

Starting at the Visitor Information Centre, taking in Abbey house and gardens, past the City Mill and along the river. Continue past the medieval walls, Wolvesey Castle and Winchester College. Explore various areas of Winchester Cathedral before concluding your journey at St Maurice's Covert.

The Upper City
(Approximately 1 mile, some stairs and fairly steep slopes, generally unsuitable for wheelchairs, allow up to 1.5 hours)

Start at St Maurice's Covert and make your way along the high street, stopping at key landmarks before heading towards the Westgate, Winchester Castle and The Great Hall. Spend some time exploring the military quarter before winding through side streets to take in fine examples of historic homes and gardens and returning to St Maurice's Covert.

Alfred's Final Journey
(Approximately 1 mile of level walking, generally suitable for wheelchairs, allow about 1 hour)

Start at St Maurice's Covert pass the New Minster, Morley College and turn on to Parchment Street. Continue past St Peter's church to reach Hyde Abbey, St Bartholomew's churchyard and Hyde Gate. Loop back to Jewry street, past Winchester Theatre Royal and back down the high street to St Maurice's Covert.
