Licoricia and her son Asher
Address:
The Arc, Jewry Street, Winchester, SO23 8SAAbout Licoricia and her son Asher
Described as the most important Jewish woman in medieval England, the life-sized statue of Licoricia and her son Asher can be enjoyed outside The Arc on Jewry Street.
Licoricia was a successful businesswoman and a prominent member of Winchester’s medieval Jewish community. Sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley, it depicts Licoricia with her youngest son, Asher, at about five to six years old, holding her hand. There are no known illustrations of Licoricia, so the sculptor has used as his inspiration his daughter and grandson, both of whom are Jewish.
