About Austen v Bridgerton: Authenticity and Creativity in Regency Costume

Austen fans worldwide often state the BBC’s 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice as their favourite. Featuring thoroughly researched and exquisitely made costumes, true to the time it was published in 1813. However, Netflix's hugely popular Bridgerton series has showcased Regency Fashion in an innovative way. Whilst many people adore this new interpretation, purists dismiss the costumes and incorrect, and the designers as amateurs. So why all the debate? In this talk, Dr Alex Walker, will take you on a journey of regency costume on stage and screen, and demonstrate that while historical accuracy is all well and good, sometimes a bit of sparkle can be just as fun
