About Winchester Chamber Music Festival
Artistic Director Kate Gould
Four days of concerts and outreach events at venues throughout Winchester packed full of engaging classical music by a hugely diverse range of composers. There is a special focus this year on certain composers who worked in Vienna – Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Mahler and Schoenberg. The Gala Concert is a celebration of classical music brought to life by large scale string forces with virtuosic soloists playing bite-sized pieces. The Late Night Concert is an eclectic mix of styles from Brazilian and Norwegian dancing rhythms to Bach’s most profound solo cello suite. And this year there is even more for the whole family – a silent Charlie Chaplin film screening with a folky score, a fun Family Concert focussing on animals, and a full performance of Saint-Saëns’ much loved Carnival of the Animals.
The exceptional line-up includes regular Festival performers alongside the leader of the Royal Opera House, Philharmonia’s principal viola, the incredibly Moore/Crawford-Phillips Piano Duo and the glowing tones of the principal flute of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. We also welcome a young quartet from the Royal Academy of Music as our Emerging Quartet-in-Residence.
